Former Australia fast bowler Jason Gillespie stepped down as Pakistan’s head coach in December 2024 following serious issues with the Pakistan Cricket Board. Gillespie addressed the matter during a recent interaction with fans on social media.
He first shared positive views on the Pakistan Super League. A follow-up question then raised his exit from Pakistan cricket. Gillespie explained that problems during his tenure made his position untenable. A senior assistant coach was removed without his knowledge or involvement. He added that several other matters affected his professional standing. The situation eventually led to his decision to leave the role.
“I was coaching the Pakistan Test side. The PCB sacked our senior assistant coach with ZERO communication with me about it- as head coach I found this situation completely unacceptable. There were a number of other issues which left me completely humiliated,” Gillespie wrote on his X account.

Pakistan experienced mixed results during Jason Gillespie’s tenure as head coach. In September 2024, the team suffered a 2-0 home Test series defeat against Bangladesh. This was followed by a strong response later that year. Pakistan lost the opening Test against England but recovered to win the series 2-1. The turnaround raised hopes of improvement in red-ball cricket. Gillespie stepped down from his role in December 2024, shortly before the tour of South Africa.
