Italy’s cricket federation omitted captain Joe Burns from their T20 World Cup squad after failing to agree on a professional contract.
Italy have left out captain Joe Burns from their squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. The Australian-born batsman, who led the team to historic qualification, will not feature in their maiden campaign.
The Italian Cricket Federation confirmed the decision. It followed discussions over Burns’ availability and a failure to agree on a professional contract. Wayne Madsen has been named the new captain.
Wayne Madsen to Lead Campaign
Madsen will also captain Italy on their upcoming tour of Ireland, starting January 23. He has previously led the side and is a key figure in the setup. Madsen has 5406 T20 runs at an average of 31.06 and features in leagues like the SA20, The Hundred, and PSL.
The federation explained the choice in a release. “The Italian Cricket Federation explained Burns’ omission by pointing to the need for stability and continuity as Italy moves forward. Madsen has been chosen as a leader for his long-term availability, which was prioritized over short-term considerations.”
The same release acknowledged Burns’ contributions. Nevertheless, Italy will begin their World Cup journey against Bangladesh at Eden Gardens on February 9.
