A journalist challenged Rashid Latif’s claim that Pakistan will beat India in a potential semi-final, starting a heated debate after India’s 61-run win.
As the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 moves into the Super 8 stage, the India–Pakistan rivalry has returned to focus. Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif predicted Pakistan could defeat India in a possible semi-final and suggested the teams might meet twice in the tournament.
“So, I see that Pakistan’s chances are looking good for the semi-finals. And stay ready for the semi-finals. One more player is coming. There will be two matches between India and Pakistan,” Latif said.
However, Rashid Latif’s prediction drew a sharp response from journalist Nauman Niaz, who questioned the realism of the claim. India defeated Pakistan by 61 runs in Colombo, extending their T20 World Cup record against them to 8-1. Ishan Kishan scored 77, while Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah led the bowling.

“I can’t take another humiliating defeat. That’s enough. No, they will close their eyes. Mr. Rashid, you are talking nonsense at this time of night,” Niaz replied
India are in Super 8 Group 1 with South Africa, West Indies and Zimbabwe, while Pakistan sit in Group 2 with England, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. A semi-final meeting remains possible if both finish in qualifying positions.
