Mohammad Kaif Backs Rohit Sharma After Gritty Fifty Against Australia

Rohit Sharma's removal as captain

Mohammad Kaif praised Rohit Sharma for his composed fifty against Australia, saying the veteran opener proved he’s “not going anywhere.”

India’s former captain Rohit Sharma played a steady knock in the second ODI against Australia at the Adelaide Oval. Despite losing two quick wickets early, Rohit and Shreyas Iyer steadied the innings and added crucial runs to help India post 264 on the board.

Though the total looked challenging for the bowlers to defend, former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif was highly impressed by Rohit’s calmness under pressure. The right-hander missed out on a well-deserved century after being dismissed by Mitchell Starc.

While the fans across India celebrated Rohit’s innings, Mohammad Kaif reminded everyone that the opener is far from done. Following his retirement from Test and T20I cricket, speculations grew around Rohit’s ODI future. However, the 38-year-old silenced the critics with a determined 73 off 97 balls, hitting seven fours and two sixes.

“Too much social media chatter about his future, tough pitch, world class pacers operating, Gill and Kohli out cheaply… Despite all that Rohit plays a very important inning for India and his career. This 73 at Adelaide will give him a lot of confidence. Rohit shows he isn’t’ going anywhere,” tweeted Kaif.

India posted 264 runs in the first innings, a competitive total considering the pitch conditions at Adelaide. However, Australia’s batting depth posed a real challenge for the visitors. At that stage, Australia had lost four wickets, with Matt Renshaw and Cooper Connolly at the crease building a steady partnership.

For India to level the series, the bowlers needed breakthroughs to halt the Australian momentum. While the home side’s lineup looked strong, Kaif’s confidence in Rohit’s return to form gave India fans renewed hope for the upcoming matches.
