Australia’s Kane Richardson Announces Retirement From Professional Cricket

Kane Richardson had announced his retirement from professional cricket after concluding his Big Bash League campaign.

Veteran Australian fast bowler Kane Richardson has announced his retirement from professional cricket, bringing the curtains down on a long and respected career across international cricket, domestic tournaments, and T20 leagues worldwide.

The 34-year-old confirmed his decision through a social media post following the conclusion of his latest Big Bash League (BBL) season with the Sydney Sixers. Richardson featured in two matches this season, with the Sixers eventually losing in the finals. He said the timing felt right after giving everything he had to the game.

“I would like to announce my retirement from professional cricket at the conclusion of this BBL. From making my debut back in 2009 until now, I feel like I have squeezed every drop out of myself and it is the right time to finish such an enjoyable part of my life,” he said.

Reflecting on his journey, Richardson expressed gratitude to those who played a key role in shaping his career, especially during his early years.

“I would like to thank all the coaches, administrators, and fellow players who have shaped my career, particularly those from my early days in South Australia and the Northern Territory,” Richardson said in his retirement statement.

The right-arm pacer also spoke about the pride of representing Australia and the significance of playing for various teams across the globe.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to represent my country, along with many franchise teams around the world, and in Australia. I have never taken the opportunity lightly and I hope the people watching knew that I had dreamt about being a cricketer since I was a kid in Darwin,” he added.

Richardson was among the first players to feature in the Big Bash League, making his debut in the tournament’s inaugural season. Across 15 BBL seasons, he emerged as one of the competition’s most consistent performers, finishing as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in men’s BBL history. He claimed 142 wickets at an average of 23.21 and an economy rate of 7.87.

During his BBL career, Richardson represented the Adelaide Strikers, Melbourne Renegades, and Sydney Sixers. He won the BBL title with the Renegades in 2019.

At the international level, Richardson played 25 One Day Internationals and 36 T20 Internationals for Australia. He was also part of Australia’s victorious 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup campaign in the UAE and featured in the subsequent edition as well, signing off as a dependable white-ball specialist for the national side.
