Kevin Pietersen Wants England to Rethink Coaching Setup After Ashes Loss

Kevin Pietersen questioned England’s coaching setup after the 4-1 Ashes loss, suggesting Andy Flower’s return as the coach.

Former England batter Kevin Pietersen has questioned England’s coaching direction following the 4-1 Ashes defeat against Australia. Pietersen believes England should consider bringing back Andy Flower, pointing to his recent success in franchise leagues and improved connection with modern players.

“This is a WILD thought. I reckon one of my wildest. Can England bring back Andy Flower now that he’s changed and in line with the modern-day player? He gets Test Cricket. I’ve been told by many players that he’s changed his ways since our drama. He’s winning leagues, so really does get the modern-day player. VERY IMPORTANT! Wild, I know! Thoughts?” Pietersen wrote in his X post.

Brendon McCullum took charge in 2022 and transformed England’s Test side with an aggressive approach. However, that momentum paused during the Ashes. Australia sealed the Ashes with a five-wicket win at the Sydney Cricket Ground, after earlier wins in Perth, Brisbane, and Adelaide. England’s only win came in Melbourne.

Meanwhile, Andy Flower carries a strong coaching record across international and franchise cricket. He joined England’s support staff as assistant coach in 2007 and became head coach in 2009. Under his leadership, England won Ashes series in 2011 and 2013. The team also enjoyed steady results in limited-overs formats. In 2010, England lifted their first ICC trophy at the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean.

Flower stepped down in early 2014 following a heavy 5-0 Ashes loss in Australia. More recently, he took Royal Challengers Bengaluru to their first IPL title in 2025, ending an 18-season wait.
