Kevin Pietersen Predicts IPL 2026 Top 4 After Opening Round

Kevin Pietersen predicted IPL 2026 Top 4 playoff contenders after the opening round, naming MI, DC, RR and Punjab Kings as early favourites.

Kevin Pietersen has shared his early Top 4 contenders for IPL 2026 after the opening round. He identified 4 teams as frontrunners based on initial performances. The former England batter backed the Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings.

Mumbai impressed with a strong run chase in their first match. Delhi showed composure in a comeback win. Rajasthan delivered a balanced display with bat and ball, whereas Punjab continued an aggressive approach for a strong win.

“Having watched the first round of matches in the IPL this season, as it stands, just on observations, this could be the top 4. MI, DC, RR, PUNJAB. This can all change with injuries etc, but that’s how I see it atm,” Pietersen wrote on X.

Surprisingly, Pietersen left Royal Challengers Bengaluru out of his top 4 for IPL 2026 despite their strong start. He pointed to concerns around middle-order consistency and spin options. He also flagged Josh Hazlewood’s fitness as a key issue.

“My concern with RCB is their middle overs and spinners. And Hazlewood’s fitness. Remember – bowlers win you championships,” he wrote.

Pietersen also ruled out Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad as early title contenders. He said these teams need major improvement.

“Something would have to change massively for me to consider CSK/SRH/KKR as title contenders,” Pietersen wrote in another post on X.

After 6 matches, the Rajasthan Royals lead with a 4.171 net run rate. RCB sits second. Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians have 2 points each. Hyderabad has also opened their account.
