KKR Likeyl to Retain Ajinkya Rahane as Captain for IPL 2026

KKR are set to retain Ajinkya Rahane as their IPL 2026 captain

A new report reveals KKR are set to retain Ajinkya Rahane as their IPL 2026 captain, dismissing talk of Varun Chakaravarthy taking over.

Kolkata Knight Riders are expected to retain Ajinkya Rahane as captain for IPL 2026, according to a recent report from Cricbuzz. This decision comes despite KKR’s disappointing 2025 campaign, where the defending champions finished seventh with five wins from 14 matches. The move also counters speculation that Varun Chakaravarthy was being considered for the leadership role.

Rahane delivered strong individual numbers last season, scoring 390 runs at a strike rate close to 150. However, his preference for the number three position forced Venkatesh Iyer, acquired for Rs 23.75 crore, and young talent Angkrish Raghuvanshi away from their natural roles. Rahane’s leadership also drew attention, as his public criticism of conditions at Eden Gardens added to the scrutiny.

Meanwhile, Venkatesh Iyer is expected to be released by Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the IPL 2026 auction, though the franchise may attempt to bring him back at a lower price. Reports also suggest that KKR plan to release Quinton de Kock and Anrich Nortje, a move that would free up an additional Rs 9.9 crore in their purse. The franchise had explored a major trade for KL Rahul from Delhi Capitals, with the intention of handing him the captaincy, but one of DC’s co-owners blocked the move.

If these releases go through, KKR will need to invest in a top-order wicketkeeper, while also balancing the roles of Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Ajinkya Rahane in the batting lineup. This comes during a period of transition for the franchise, which has already appointed Abhishek Nayar as head coach and added Tim Southee and Shane Watson to the support staff.
