Virat Kohli Advised to Avoid Overthinking After First ODI Failure by Matthew Hayden

Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden backed Virat Kohli to recover strongly in the ongoing ODI series against Australia, advising him to stay confident and avoid overthinking.

Virat Kohli had a disappointing return in the first ODI against Australia at Optus Stadium, Perth, on October 19. Playing his first international match since the 2025 Champions Trophy final in March, Kohli was dismissed for a duck in just eight balls. He edged a delivery from Mitchell Starc outside off-stump to Cooper Connolly at backward point and had to walk back without scoring.

Despite this, former Australian opener Matthew Hayden praised Kohli’s exceptional batting skills, noting his 14,000 runs in limited-overs cricket. Hayden emphasized that Kohli thrives when he remains confident and focused, cautioning against overthinking at the crease.

“Virat Kohli’s striking ability and contact points are exceptional. After scoring 14,000 runs in this format, there’s little to question about his approach, as he consistently plays the ball on the rise and finds timing early,” Hayden said on Star Sports.

“One thing I hope he avoids is arguing with himself and overthinking, which can lead to mistakes. He is destructive when he has clarity, certainty, and the ability to read the game—qualities his experience provides,” he added.
