Netherlands opener Max O’Dowd revealed he faced harsh online abuse on Instagram after dropping Faheem Ashraf in the T20 World Cup opener.
Netherlands opener Max O’Dowd endured a difficult week of online abuse following his side’s T20 World Cup opener against Pakistan in Colombo on February 7. He became a key talking point after missing a straightforward catch of Faheem Ashraf in the penultimate over at long-on. The Netherlands were in control at that stage, but the dropped chance allowed Ashraf to finish unbeaten on 29 off 11 balls and steer Pakistan to a win.
Over the next two to three days, O’Dowd faced heavy abuse on Instagram. Several comments questioned how a simple chance went down at such a key moment. More offensive messages, containing explicit language, were not suitable for public display. Speaking ahead of the Namibia match in New Delhi, O’Dowd revealed that most negative comments came from Indian users.
“Some of the comments were quite harsh, something that should never be said to anyone. It seems that Indian fans were angrier with me than the Dutch supporters,” O’Dowd was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

In the match, the missed catch proved decisive. Pakistan went down to 119/7 after 18 overs, needing 29 from 12 balls. Logan van Beek bowled the 19th over. Faheem Ashraf struck a six first ball, reducing the target to 23 from 11. A full toss followed, but O’Dowd failed to hold the catch at long-off. Ashraf then hit two sixes and a four, sealing the chase with three balls remaining.
