Mohammad Amir Advises Abhishek Sharma To Work On Technique After India’s Loss

India Coach Morne Morkel Dismisses Talks of Dropping Abhishek Sharma

Mohammad Amir urged Abhishek Sharma to show more patience after India’s defeat to South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 clash.

Former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir advised Abhishek Sharma not to premeditate his shots and instead judge the line and length before attacking. Amir shared his views after India’s heavy loss to South Africa in their first Super 8 match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

The match took place at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, February 22. Chasing a target of 188, India lost Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma within the first seven balls. The responsibility then fell on Abhishek, who had come into the game after registering three consecutive ducks in the tournament.

The Punjab batter started positively. He hit a boundary off the first ball he faced from Aiden Markram and followed it with a smart six off Kagiso Rabada. However, his innings ended at 15 off 12 balls. He attempted to hoick Marco Jansen to the on-side for a six but failed to get the distance. Corbin Bosch completed a brilliant diving catch after running backwards.

During a television show in Pakistan, the anchor reminded Amir of his earlier remarks about Abhishek, when he had called the top-ranked T20I batter a “slogger.”

“Amir bhai, you got Abhishek Sharma out four times by sitting over here in Lahore,” the anchor mentioned.

Amir responded quickly and clarified his earlier comments while defending the Indian batter. “I was talking about him as a bowler. Good bowlers and good teams can expose him. The 14 runs he scored against South Africa were on one side of the wicket, and even the balls were not good,” Amir said.

According to Cricketopia, Amir also pointed out that India missed experienced players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma during the run chase against South Africa.

Amir on Abhishek Sharma’s Intent

Amir praised Abhishek’s fearless approach, noting that the 25-year-old did not change his attacking mindset despite three consecutive ducks. At the same time, he advised the youngster to improve his patience and technique at the international level.

“He is a brave player. Even after three zeroes, his intent didn’t change. He was not on the back foot and didn’t look to score 15-20 runs before playing big shots. As a senior player, I would suggest him to work on his technique as international cricket exposes you. He needs to add patience to his game and play according to the merit of the ball. He has the skills, but it is up to him how he utilizes them,” he added.
