Mohammed Shami is reportedly in contention for a return to India’s ODI squad for the New Zealand series starting January 11, with selectors closely monitoring his fitness.
India pacer Mohammed Shami could return to international cricket in the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand, starting January 11 in Vadodara. The fast bowler last played for India on March 9, 2025, during the ICC Champions Trophy final against New Zealand in Dubai.
According to reports from NDTV, the selection panel is tracking his domestic performances closely, with fitness being the only factor under review. If cleared medically, Shami could feature against New Zealand. His experience also keeps him in long-term plans, including the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Notably, Shami remains India’s highest wicket-taker in ICC white-ball tournaments. However, he has not featured in a Test since the World Test Championship final against Australia in June 2023. His most recent T20I appearance came against England in Mumbai on February 2, 2025.
Despite missing out on selection, Shami has delivered strong domestic performances. He has taken 6 wickets in 3 matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26. He also took 16 wickets in 7 Elite Group C games for Bengal during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025.
