Mohammed Shami Vows to Keep Fighting for India Comeback

Mohammad Shami’s Omission From ODI Squad Raises Selection Questions

Mohammed Shami reaffirmed his commitment to India, saying he will use “every last drop” of fuel left in the tank as he pushes for a national comeback.

India fast bowler Mohammed Shami has made it clear that he is far from done with international cricket. Speaking at the News18 Rising Bharat Summit, the 35-year-old said he remains motivated despite injuries, setbacks and being left out of recent national squads.

Shami, who returned from a long injury layoff in November 2024, has been working hard in domestic cricket with Bengal. In the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2025–26 season, he has delivered impressive performances, including a career-best 8 for 90 against Jammu and Kashmir in the semi-final. In 12 innings this season, he has taken 36 wickets, the sixth-highest tally in the competition.

However, Shami’s determination remains firm. “I always say this: no matter what you do or which sport you play, if you have potential, don’t waste it. If there’s fuel in your tank, it’s on you to use every last drop and keep pushing forward,” Shami said.

His words reflected a personal resolve rather than just motivation. He stressed that representing India remains his biggest goal.

“When it comes to representing my country, I’d give everything I have. I never want to look back and regret leaving even a fraction of my potential untapped,” he said at the News18 Rising Bharat Summit.

Shami had expressed similar intent last October after claiming a five-wicket haul against Gujarat in the Ranji Trophy. “A lot of hard work is there, and I believe luck too plays a part. Every person wants to play for the country. So, I am ready for that (again),” Shami told reporters.

“My motivation is to stay fit and be available for the Indian team at all times. On the ground, I will continue to perform, and the rest is in the selectors’ hands.”

While selectors, including chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India have not commented on his future, Shami has let his performances speak for him.

For now, the experienced pacer continues to focus on fitness and results. As he said himself, if there is still fuel left in the tank, he plans to use every last drop.
