CSK Await MS Dhoni’s Return As Michael Hussey Shares Star’s Fitness Status In IPL 2026

MS Dhoni’s ‘Sheesha Man’ Secret Revealed By Former CSK Teammate

MS Dhoni is nearing a return for CSK but will only play once he feels “100 per cent” fit, as confirmed by batting coach Michael Hussey.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) continue to remain optimistic about the return of MS Dhoni later in the ongoing IPL 2026 season, despite the veteran missing the first seven matches due to a calf strain. The former skipper has gradually resumed training and was recently seen batting in the nets and even practicing wicketkeeping, signaling positive progress in his recovery.

However, the franchise is taking a cautious approach regarding his comeback. CSK are unwilling to rush Dhoni back into action unless he is fully match-ready. His absence was notably felt even as the team registered a record victory over Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium, underlining both their current momentum and the importance of Dhoni’s eventual return.

Michael Hussey Provides Detailed Fitness Update

CSK batting coach Michael Hussey offered a comprehensive update on Dhoni’s condition, stressing that the player himself will make the final call on his return.

“He’s (Dhoni) progressing really well,” Hussey said on Thursday. “I know he’s pushing hard to return as soon as possible, and the fans are eager to see MS Dhoni back on the field. We’re hopeful it could be in the next few games, but he needs to be close to 100 per cent to give his best,” Hussey told reporters.

Hussey further highlighted that while Dhoni has looked sharp with the bat in practice sessions, match fitness, especially running between the wickets, remains the primary concern.

“He’s been batting well in the nets and looks in good touch, now it’s also about being able to run hard between the wickets,” he added.

Wicketkeeping Role And Samson’s Impact

In Dhoni’s absence, Sanju Samson has stepped up as CSK’s wicketkeeper-batter after being traded from Rajasthan Royals last season. Samson has delivered impressive performances both behind the stumps and with the bat, including a match-winning century against Mumbai Indians.

Despite Samson’s strong showing, Hussey made it clear that Dhoni is expected to reclaim his role once fully fit.

“I’m quite sure he’ll (Dhoni) be back behind the stumps,” Hussey said. “The main concern is the calf injury, it’s about the running, especially late in the innings when he may need to push hard for ones and twos. He just needs to ensure the calf is strong enough to handle that workload.”

He further added, “From a skill perspective, we know exactly what MS Dhoni can do as a wicketkeeper, and he’s batting really well. It’s now about regaining full confidence in that calf.”
