Nathan Lyon shared how he wants to bounce back after his hamstring injury sidelined him from Ashes.
Australia’s Ashes campaign has suffered a major setback with veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon ruled out after undergoing hamstring surgery. The 38-year-old, however, is resolved to return to the field. His absence has forced a reshuffle for the fourth Test and intensified conversations about Australia’s future spin-bowling options.
Lyon sustained a serious tear to his right hamstring while diving to stop a boundary on the final day of the third Test in Adelaide. The injury ended his series, and he has since had surgery. Coach Andrew McDonald addressed the loss, stating Lyon was deeply disappointed but dismissing premature speculation about the end of his Test career.
“He’s pretty shattered. He’s a huge part of what we do. He’s facing a long recovery timeframe. That type of injury, is going to be a hard period for him to get back to where he was. But he still wants to do it and that’s the main thing,” McDonald told cricket.com.au.
“India’s on the horizon, he’ll be a key part of that. We’ve got New Zealand (and) South Africa before that. So, get through this rehab and then (we’ll) look forward,” he added, confirming Lyon remains part of Australia’s long-term plans despite a recovery period of three to four months.

This is Lyon’s second significant injury in two years, following a calf issue that sidelined him during the 2023 Ashes. Australia’s next Test is not until mid-2026, leading into a busy schedule that includes a crucial five-Test tour of India in early 2027.
