New Zealand Cricket named a 14-man Test squad featuring Kane Williamson’s return for the upcoming West Indies series.
New Zealand have announced their squad for the three-Test home series against West Indies beginning December 2. Captain Kane Williamson, who retired from T20Is this November, returns to the side after missing the recent Test series against Zimbabwe, strengthening the batting lineup for their first World Test Championship matches of the current cycle.
The 14-man squad includes debutants Jacob Duffy and Zakary Foulkes, both set to play their first WTC matches. Several key players remain unavailable due to injury management and fitness concerns.
Squad Composition and Selection Decisions
Head coach Rob Walter expressed enthusiasm about Williamson’s return to the Test setup. “Kane’s ability on the field speaks for itself and it will be great to have his skills as well as his leadership back in the Test group,” Walter said. “He’s had a bit of time off to get himself ready for red-ball cricket, and I know he’s looking forward to playing for Northern Districts in the second round of the Plunket Shield in the lead-up to the first Test.”
Walter also praised the new additions to the squad, particularly highlighting Foulkes’ impressive debut. “Zak couldn’t have performed much better in his first Test against Zimbabwe. That, along with his recent form across the white-ball tours, has rightfully earned him selection.”
The squad sees several notable absences due to injury management. Kyle Jamieson continues to be managed carefully following his back injury recovery, while Glenn Phillips hasn’t yet regained full match fitness. Fast bowlers Matt Fisher (shin), Will O’Rourke (back), and Ben Sears (hamstring) were also unavailable for selection.

West Indies face a challenging assignment, having failed to secure a victory in their five WTC matches so far this cycle. They suffered 3-0 and 2-0 defeats against Australia and India respectively. The series opens at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on December 2.
