ICC Punishes Nonkululeko Mlaba For Provoking Harleen Deol After Dismissal In IND-W vs SA-W Clash

ICC punishes Nonkululeko Mlaba for provoking Harleen Deol during Women’s World Cup clash.

South Africa’s spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba has received an official reprimand and one demerit point from the ICC for a breach of conduct during the Women’s World Cup match against India.

The incident occurred during South Africa’s three-wicket victory, which handed the Indian team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, their first loss of the tournament. Mlaba’s sanction stems from her actions following the dismissal of Indian batter Harleen Deol.

The governing body stated that “Mlaba was found to have breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to ‘using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match’.” The specific incident took place in the 17th over of India’s innings when Mlaba waved goodbye to Deol after taking her wicket.

“In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to Mlaba’s disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period,” the ICC added. Mlaba admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Trudy Anderson of the ICC International Panel of Match Referees, making a formal hearing unnecessary.

The charges were filed by on-field umpires Jacqueline Williams and Kim Cotton, third umpire Candace Le Borde, and fourth umpire Sue Redfern.

The ICC further clarified that “Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.”

SA-W Upsets IND-W with Nadine’s Heroics

As of the match, Nadine de Klerk’s unbeaten 84 guided South Africa to a thrilling chase against India in the Women’s World Cup, overshadowing Richa Ghosh’s valiant 94. Chasing 276, South Africa recovered from 81/5 as de Klerk’s late onslaught sealed victory with seven balls remaining.

Earlier, Ghosh and Sneh Rana powered India to 275 after a collapse, while Mlaba and Tryon struck crucial blows. Laura Wolvaardt anchored South Africa’s innings with a composed fifty before de Klerk’s fireworks turned the game around. The win lifted South Africa to fourth on the points table, level with England and India but behind on net run rate.
