Pat Cummins Focused On Resting Ahead Of T20 World Cup 2026

Australia Coach Explains Pat Cummins’ Exit From The Ashes – “Didn’t Want To Risk Him”

Pat Cummins confirmed a strong comeback from his back injury during the Ashes, explaining his decision to skip the remaining Tests.

Australian Test and ODI captain Pat Cummins has made a successful comeback from a back injury during the ongoing Ashes series.

After missing the first two Tests, his six-wicket haul in Adelaide was instrumental in securing an unassailable 3-0 lead against England. With the series decided, he was rested from the final two matches to avoid unnecessary risk, turning his focus instead to the upcoming T20 World Cup.

“Feeling good, so got through Adelaide unscathed, so pretty happy. As of a few weeks ago, I was still coming back from a back injury so playing back-to-back Test matches was pretty high risk. Cool our heels for a little bit with the T20 World Cup next month,” Cummins stated.

This comes after coach Andrew McDonald indicated the fast bowler was not a guaranteed selection for the tournament, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

Cummins also provided an update on teammate Nathan Lyon, confirming a long rehabilitation ahead for the off-spinner following surgery.

“He had surgery a couple of days ago, so he’ll have a lengthy layoff, I don’t know exactly, but it will be at least a few months. Bit of a long road ahead for him, but he’s done it before so hopefully he’ll be back. It was a big one, so surgery, and he has his crutches in the change room at the moment so we wish him the best… it was a shame but he put a brave face after the Test,” Cummins said.
