Phil Salt’s injury forces him to return to the UK for scans, handing Jacob Bethell an extended opportunity at the top for RCB in IPL 2026.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have been dealt a setback in IPL 2026 as England wicketkeeper-batter Phil Salt has returned to the United Kingdom for medical scans after missing their last three matches.
The explosive opener, who had been in fine form at the start of the season, sustained a finger injury during RCB’s home clash against Delhi Capitals on April 18.
While the franchise has not officially disclosed the details of the injury, it is understood that Salt hurt a finger on his left hand while attempting a diving stop at deep backward square leg during the sixth over of the second innings.
The injury forced him out of subsequent matches, despite an impressive tally of 202 runs in six innings at a strike rate of 168.33.
ECB Intervention And Recovery Timeline
According to reports from ESPNCricinfo, Salt, who holds a central contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), returned home at the request of England’s management to undergo further evaluation. The scans are expected to determine the extent of the damage and provide clarity on his recovery timeline.
Both the player and the franchise remain optimistic about his return, with hopes that he could rejoin the squad later this month. RCB, who are aiming to defend their maiden IPL title, are keen to have Salt back at the top of the order as soon as possible.

Bethell Gets Opportunity As RCB Assess Options
In Salt’s absence, fellow England cricketer Jacob Bethell has been promoted to open alongside Virat Kohli. Though Bethell has managed only 39 runs in three innings so far, the youngster is likely to continue getting opportunities if Salt’s recovery is delayed. Jordan Cox also remains available as a backup option in the squad.
As per IPL regulations, RCB have the option to sign a replacement player if Salt’s injury is confirmed to be season-ending. However, the franchise is expected to wait and give him adequate time to recover.

The injury comes at an unfortunate time for Salt, who had rediscovered his form in the IPL after a quiet T20 World Cup campaign with England. Meanwhile, RCB are currently on a short mid-season break following their defeat to Gujarat Titans, with several players travelling to the Maldives before their next fixture against Lucknow Super Giants.
