BCCI Plans Strict IPL Rules On ‘Girlfriend Culture’ After Concerns Over Discipline Protocols

BCCI is set to introduce stricter IPL rules targeting ‘girlfriend culture’ to strengthen discipline and safeguard anti-corruption protocols.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering the introduction of stricter off-field regulations during the Indian Premier League (IPL) to address concerns around what has been termed as “girlfriend culture.”

The move comes shortly after similar norms were enforced for Indian players during international assignments, with a focus on maintaining discipline, professionalism, and streamlined team environments.

According to reports, the matter is expected to be formally discussed in the upcoming BCCI meeting, where officials aim to bring clarity and uniformity to player conduct guidelines across franchises.

“We are discussing this among ourselves. It will be discussed in the next BCCI meeting. There is no problem with wives and family members staying in the hotel with the players, but we will have to be a little more serious about girlfriends,” a BCCI official said in a report as quoted by Jagran.

Rising Concerns After Frequent Sightings Of Players With Partners

The development follows multiple instances where high-profile Indian cricketers such as Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Arshdeep Singh were reportedly seen with their partners at team hotels and even during team movements.

These occurrences have raised concerns within the board about maintaining a controlled and professional environment during the tournament.

Officials believe that while family presence is acceptable, the increasing trend of players being accompanied by girlfriends has blurred previously defined boundaries.

“We made this rule, and something will have to be done regarding the IPL too. Previously in IPL, girlfriends were not allowed to stay in players’ hotels, but now it has become a trend. I spoke to an officer from the IPL’s anti-corruption unit about this, and he told us that we have been asked to allow wives and ‘officially announced girlfriends’ to stay together,” the official added.

Another key factor behind the proposed regulations is the potential risk linked to information security. With several players’ partners being active social media personalities, officials fear that sensitive team details could be unintentionally exposed.

An IPL anti-corruption unit official also hinted at ongoing internal discussions regarding stricter enforcement of such policies.

“Sir, we’re just doing it that way. It’s certain that the BCCI will now introduce stricter rules regarding whether or not to stay with a girlfriend,” an officer in IPL’s anti-corruption unit said.

While enforcing such measures is relatively straightforward in international cricket, where the BCCI has direct control, the IPL presents a unique challenge due to its franchise-based structure.

With ten privately managed teams, monitoring off-field activities consistently becomes more complex, prompting the board to consider tighter regulations moving forward.
