Rajasthan Royals Set To Be Punished By BCCI After Riyan Parag’s Vaping Incident

Virender Sehwag Questions Riyan Parag’s Captaincy After Another Failure

After Riyan Parag was punished by the BCCI for vaping, Rajasthan Royals is now set to face harsher punishment.

Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag has been penalised by the BCCI after he was caught vaping inside the team dressing room during an IPL 2026 match in Mullanpur. The incident was shown during a live broadcast, triggering massive debate online.

Parag later admitted to the offence, following which the BCCI fined him 25 per cent of his match fee and added a demerit point to his disciplinary record. Now, the BCCI is considering punishing Rajasthan Royals as a team because of the skipper’s mistake.

In a statement on Thursday, the board said, “was found to have breached Article 2.21 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which relates to conduct that brings the game into disrepute.” Vaping is illegal in India, where a first-time offender can be fined Rs 1 lakh and/or face one year of imprisonment.

Why BCCI Action Could Extend To Rajasthan Royals

The matter has now escalated beyond the player, with the BCCI exploring possible action against Rajasthan Royals as a franchise. This comes amid concerns over discipline and team culture within the setup.

RR head coach Kumar Sangakkara admitted the incident had a negative impact, stating, “Such controversies are no positives for the team and all I can say is that both issues have been addressed by the BCCI and the franchise. It is a reminder to the players that they have to maintain the team’s culture,” to the reporters.

This is the second instance of disciplinary action involving the franchise this season. Earlier, team manager Romi Bhinder was fined Rs 1 lakh for using a mobile phone in the dugout, further raising questions about internal control.

BCCI Yet To Decide As RR Prepare For Next Match

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the board is still evaluating its options regarding action against the franchise.

“As it is written clearly in the statement, we are exploring what action to take on the team. It is not decided yet,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals will return to action against Delhi Capitals in Jaipur. With scrutiny increasing, the team’s conduct and performance in the upcoming matches will remain under close watch.

Repeated Breaches Highlight Growing Concerns Around Team Discipline

The back-to-back violations suggest a worrying trend for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026. Multiple breaches within a short span indicate lapses in maintaining professional standards in a high-profile tournament.

The BCCI’s response though, calls for a strict stance on preserving the league’s image. If further action is taken against the franchise, it could serve as a warning to other teams to tighten their internal regulations.

As of IPL 2026, the team is doing pretty well on the points table almost virtually sealing their playoff chances with 6 wins and 12 points and multiple games still left to play. If any disciplinary action is taken against RR, it must not reflect on their campaign points, however, stricter regulations will definitely be imposed.
