Rashid Latif predicts England will defeat India in the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal at Wankhede, saying just two or three successful batters could be enough to secure victory.
Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif believes England have a strong chance of defeating defending champions India national cricket team in the semifinal of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium.
According to Latif, England only need a couple of batters to click in order to overcome India and book their place in the final.
Speaking during a Pakistani television show, Latif predicted that England cricket team would edge past India in Thursday’s high-stakes semifinal. The winner of the contest will advance to the final where they will face New Zealand national cricket team, who secured their spot after defeating South Africa national cricket team in the first semifinal.
Latif highlighted England’s batting depth as a key factor that could tilt the match in their favour. “England will win the semifinals. They are coming from difficult conditions and two to three batters have succeeded. That is what they need and their middle order is strong,” Latif said.
India currently hold a narrow 3–2 advantage over England in their head-to-head record in T20 World Cup history. Their first meeting came in the inaugural tournament when India secured an 18-run victory in a memorable match that featured Yuvraj Singh smashing six sixes in a single over.
England, however, have had their share of success in the rivalry. In the 2009 edition, India narrowly missed the target of 154 by just three runs. The India national cricket team bounced back strongly in 2012 with a comprehensive 90-run victory.
A decade later, England dominated India in a semifinal encounter to reach the final. Two years after that defeat, India, led by Rohit Sharma, managed to settle the score with a crucial win.
England’s Form And Tactical Plans Against India
England have shown impressive resilience throughout the tournament. The team fought through challenging moments to secure victories over Nepal national cricket team and Pakistan national cricket team, demonstrating composure under pressure.
They also remained unbeaten during the Super 8 stage, including a significant win against New Zealand, which boosted their confidence ahead of the semifinal clash.

Latif further suggested that England’s familiarity with conditions could give them an advantage. “England know these conditions very well. Even if just one England player performs, that will be enough for India to lose,” Latif added.
From a tactical standpoint, England are expected to test India’s top order aggressively. Fast bowler Jofra Archer could rely on short-pitched deliveries against Sanju Samson, while Will Jacks might use his off-spin early in the innings to challenge Abhishek Sharma during the powerplay.
