Travis Head delivered one of his finest innings on a pitch that saw 32 wickets fall in two days, guiding Australia to an eight-wicket win in Perth and giving them a 1-0 lead in the Ashes. Promoted to open, he took charge of a chase of 205 with a fearless 123 off 83 balls, striking 16 fours and four sixes on a surface where only one other batter had passed 50.

The knock added to Head’s growing list of game-changing tons, including his decisive hundreds in the 2023 World Test Championship final and ODI World Cup final. Former India coach Ravi Shastri, who witnessed those earlier innings firsthand, praised Travis Head for his latest ton and described it as one of the standout innings of the modern era.

“Travis Head… two years ago, you plunged my country into silence. And today, you have done it again, in the best format of the game, in blistering fashion, with one of the great innings. Take a bow. England… that was special,” Shastri wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

In the match, England looked set to seize control after dismissing Australia for 132 and earning a 40-run lead, but their advantage disappeared quickly as another collapse took them from 65 for 1 to 164 all out. Australia responded with a sharp start in the chase, with Travis Head and debutant Jake Weatherald putting on 75 for the first wicket. Head’s quick scoring left only 13 runs to finish the job, which Marnus Labuschagne, unbeaten on 51, and Steven Smith, on 2, completed with ease to seal the win.
