West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced that a new cricket stadium will be built in Siliguri. The stadium will be named after World Cup-winning wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh. This decision follows India’s historic victory in the 2025 ICC Women’s ODI World Cup. The aim is to encourage young athletes, especially from the north Bengal region.
Announcing the project, Banerjee said, “The ‘Richa Cricket Stadium’ will be built on a 27-acre plot at the Chandmani Tea Estate. This is a way to honour Richa, one of Bengal’s shining sports talents, and also encourage more young cricketers from north Bengal.” She further added that the state government will soon begin construction.

Richa Ghosh Gets Honoured
Siliguri, which is Richa Ghosh’s hometown, has been celebrating her success. The 22-year-old has received several honors from the state. These include the Banga Bhushan award and an appointment as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP). She was also given a gold chain. The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) also honored her in a ceremony attended by Sourav Ganguly and Mamata Banerjee.
Richa Ghosh was a key player in India’s World Cup win. She scored 235 runs in eight innings. Her average was 39.16 and her strike rate was 133.52. She was rewarded with ₹34 lakh—₹1 lakh for each run she scored in the final. In the championship match, she scored a crucial 34 runs off 24 balls. Her highest score in the tournament was 94 runs against South Africa.
