India bowling coach Morne Morkel opined that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli could still play the 2027 World Cup if they stay fit and committed to the workload.
India bowling coach Morne Morkel addressed the growing debate around Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s long-term future. He stated that both seniors remain in the 2027 World Cup conversation if they maintain fitness and stay committed to the demands of international cricket. Their return during the Australia series in October renewed questions about whether they could sustain performance levels while featuring only in ODIs.
In the series, Rohit delivered a strong comeback with a fifty and a century. Kohli struggled initially with two ducks but recovered with an unbeaten 74 in Sydney.
Morkel stressed that experience remains crucial in major events and praised the influence both players bring to a dressing room.
“They are quality players. As long as they are happy to put in the hard work and the fitness. I have always believed in experience and to have that experience, you don’t find that anywhere,” the coach said while speaking to the media.
“So for sure, if they mentally and physically feel that their bodies can do that, it is still a long way away, the World Cup, by all means. I have played many games against them. I have had sleepless nights, bowling to them. So I know, as a bowler, what goes through your preparation when playing against them,” Morkel added.
Various reports also suggest the selectors may ask the duo to appear in the Vijay Hazare Trophy before the New Zealand series to ensure adequate match time.

India’s long-term planning continues, but the possibility of Rohit and Kohli travelling to South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe in 2027 remains open as long as their physical and mental standards stay high.
