Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were felicitated in a light-hearted ceremony at Kotambi Stadium during the 1st ODI against New Zealand.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were honoured by the Baroda Cricket Association during India’s first ODI against New Zealand at the Kotambi Stadium on Sunday, January 11. The venue, which was hosting its maiden men’s 50-over international, marked the occasion by felicitating the two ODI greats with flower bouquets during the mid-innings break.
The brief ceremony quickly went viral for its unusual and humorous execution. In the presence of ICC president Jay Shah and BCCI head Mithun Manhas, organisers arranged a cupboard-like structure featuring life-size cut-outs of Kohli and Rohit. To the amusement of fans, the two stars were brought out from inside the cupboard when their names were announced.
Cricket fans online were quick to label it an “unboxing ceremony” for the senior duo. Kohli and Rohit themselves appeared thoroughly entertained by the novelty, sharing a laugh as they accepted the bouquets and later signed their life-sized photographs.
The gesture was part of the grand welcome extended to the Indian stalwarts in Vadodara. With Kotambi Stadium hosting its first-ever men’s ODI and a crowd of nearly 35,000 in attendance, the organisers appeared keen to celebrate players who have shaped ODI batting over the past decade and a half.
Given that venues like Kotambi rarely get the opportunity to stage an ODI, the felicitation served as a tribute to two icons nearing the final phase of their international careers. On the field, India won the toss and chose to bowl on a sluggish surface. New Zealand started strongly through Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls, who added a century-plus opening stand. However, India clawed their way back into the contest, eventually restricting the visitors to 300 for 8 in 50 overs.
Daryl Mitchell anchored the innings with a composed knock, guiding the Black Caps to a competitive total on a slow pitch.Throughout the match, the atmosphere inside the stadium was electric, with chants of “Rohit-Rohit” and “Kohli-Kohli” echoing from the stands. Every boundary struck by either batter brought the crowd to its feet.

Rohit Sharma opened the batting for India but failed to convert his start, falling in the ninth over. Kyle Jamieson dismissed the Indian captain with a delivery that bounced sharply, trapping him at mid-off. Rohit’s brief stay featured some fluent strokeplay, including three fours and two sixes.
His dismissal brought Virat Kohli to the crease, and the former skipper made an immediate impact, driving Zakary Foulkes for two authoritative boundaries that sent the Kotambi crowd into raptures.
