Sunil Gavaskar opined that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are likely to feature in the 2027 ODI World Cup, given their form, experience and commitment.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli silenced their critics with strong performances in India’s nine-wicket win over Australia in the Sydney ODI. Rohit struck an unbeaten 121 off 125 balls, while Kohli returned to form with 74 not out after two early failures.
With the 2027 ODI World Cup still two years away, discussions around their inclusion have already begun. India’s recent transitions in Tests and T20Is saw both veterans retire from the formats.
Former captain Sunil Gavaskar believes their place in the next World Cup squad is almost certain, given their fitness, consistency, and match-winning ability.
“The moment they made themselves available for this trip, it was clear they want to be there for the 2027 World Cup. And irrespective of what happens between now and then – whether they score runs or not – with the ability and experience they possess, if they’re available, they’ll be certainties in the squad,” Gavaskar told India Today.
“With this kind of form, you can write their names straight into the World Cup squad for South Africa 2027,” he added.
Rohit Sharma Reflects on Long-Awaited Partnership
Notably, the duo added over 100 runs together for the first time in a long while, stabilizing the innings after Shubman Gill’s dismissal. After the match, Rohit highlighted how their strong understanding and on-field communication helped them in the chase.
“It was a fantastic partnership after a long, long time I think we haven’t had a 100-run partnership for a long time. It was good to get that partnership from the team’s perspective,” he said.

“Looking at how we were placed at one point, we had lost Gill early there. Not early perhaps, we managed to get off to a start and then he got out so obviously we knew with Shreyas not being there it was an added responsibility on other batters, and it was a great partnership. We enjoyed every moment we spent out there, there was a lot of chatter between the two of us,” Rohit concluded.
