Fans expressed disappointment on social media as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli got out early in India’s ODI series opener against Australia.
The long-awaited return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in India’s ODI series against Australia on Sunday ended in disappointment. Both players had been away from competitive cricket for seven months, returning under new captain Shubman Gill.
Rohit Sharma, playing his 500th international match, managed just 8 runs off 14 balls before Josh Hazlewood dismissed him. Virat Kohli also struggled, leaving the crease for a duck after facing only eight balls, edging a delivery outside off-stump to Cooper Connolly.

Fans on social media expressed frustration at the below-par performances, noting the lack of match practice ahead of their return. Both are currently active only in ODIs, having last played during the 2025 Champions Trophy final in March. Despite high expectations, their early dismissals have left the Indian innings off to a shaky start.

Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli could’ve played domestic yet they both decided to stay at home and not doing much.
They both didn’t look comfortable. If that’s the case they both gotta retire pic.twitter.com/T07sU5snmy

The pre-match PR for Rohit and Kohli lasted way longer than their combined innings. This is why our evolution in red ball cricket makes many fan clubs angry.

Not ideal start for both the big guns. It’s never easy no matter how big a player one is. Playing in Indian jersey after 200+ days. Arriving just 3 days before the game. Against 2 of the best bowlers in intl cricket. It was never going to be easy. #INDvsAUS
