Salman Ali Agha Clears Air On Pakistan T20I Captaincy After T20 World Cup 2026 Exit

PCB Upset as ICC Leaves Pakistan Captain Salman Ali Agha Out of T20 World Cup Ticket Poster | Reports

Salman Ali Agha responded to questions about his captaincy after Pakistan crashed out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

Pakistan all-rounder Salman Ali Agha has addressed growing speculation about his future as T20I captain after the team’s early exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

Although Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka in their final Super Eights match at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Saturday, the win was not enough to take them into the semi-finals. The result triggered serious questions about the team’s leadership and overall performance.

During the post-match press conference, Agha was asked directly whether he planned to resign or if the Pakistan Cricket Board would remove him from the captaincy.

The skipper stayed calm and advised against taking emotional decisions. “To make a decision right now would be purely emotional. We will return home, take a couple of days — perhaps two to four — and then determine the appropriate course of action,” Agha stated.

Agha took over the captaincy in March 2025 after succeeding Mohammad Rizwan. Since then, he has led Pakistan in 50 T20Is, winning 31 matches and losing 18, giving him a strong win percentage of 62.

However, his time as captain has seen mixed results in major tournaments. Pakistan struggled in the Asia Cup 2025, where they suffered four defeats against arch-rivals India. The team again lost to India in the T20 World Cup, continuing a trend of narrow defeats in important matches.

How Pakistan Were Kicked Out Of The Tournament

Pakistan entered their final Super Eights match placed third in Group 2. They needed not just a win but a big victory margin to surpass New Zealand on net run rate and qualify for the semi-finals.

Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka put Pakistan into bat first. Pakistan responded with a strong total of 212 for 8. Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman built a record 176-run opening partnership. Zaman scored a quick 84 off 42 balls, while Farhan played a brilliant knock of 100 from 60 deliveries, hitting nine fours and five sixes.

To qualify, Pakistan needed to restrict Sri Lanka to 147 or fewer. Sri Lanka, however, fought back strongly and finished at 207 for 6. In a tense final over, Sri Lanka required 28 runs. Shanaka smashed three consecutive sixes and a four off the first four balls bowled by Shaheen Afridi. The left-arm pacer then bowled two dot balls to secure the win for Pakistan.

Despite the victory, Pakistan failed to achieve the required margin and crashed out of the tournament, leaving Agha’s captaincy under fresh scrutiny.
