Sanath Jayasuriya stepped down as Sri Lanka’s head coach after the team’s early exit from the T20 World Cup.
Sanath Jayasuriya has decided to step down as Sri Lanka’s head coach, delivering the news in dramatic fashion. He did not inform Sri Lanka Cricket beforehand, and the announcement came directly during the post-match press conference following Sri Lanka’s narrow defeat that ended their T20 World Cup campaign.
Sri Lanka’s campaign ended with a close loss, crushing their hopes at a home World Cup. At the post-match conference, Jayasuriya said his original contract runs until June 2026. However, his tone reflected disappointment, and it sounded like he had already made up his mind.
There is still a possibility that he could oversee the upcoming bilateral T20I and ODI series against Afghanistan, starting March 13 in Sharjah. Beyond that, however, his future with the team looks uncertain.
Sri Lanka Cricket had prepared extensively for the 2026 T20 World Cup. The board strengthened the support staff with experienced names. Vikram Rathour handled batting duties, R Sridhar took charge of fielding, Lasith Malinga joined as bowling consultant, and Rene Ferdinands worked closely with the spinners.

On paper, the coaching group looked strong and well-balanced. The team also enjoyed home advantage, familiar pitches, favourable conditions, and strong crowd support.
Despite these factors, Sri Lanka failed to perform consistently. The team missed the semi-finals after suffering four consecutive defeats, ending their home World Cup dream. In such situations, responsibility often falls on the head coach.
Jayasuriya’s Glorious Sri Lanka Career As a Coach
Jayasuriya’s early tenure showed promise. He took charge soon after the 2024 T20 World Cup and began strongly.
Sri Lanka defeated India in an ODI bilateral series in August 2024, marking their first such series win over India in 27 years. In September that year, Sri Lanka won a Test at The Oval. Although they had already lost the series, that victory demonstrated fighting spirit. They followed it up with a 2-0 Test series win over New Zealand at home.
However, the momentum did not last. Sri Lanka delivered an average performance in the 2025 Asia Cup. They struggled in the T20I tri-series in Pakistan. England then swept them 3-0 in a T20I series before the World Cup.
The final setback came in the home T20 World Cup, where Sri Lanka lost four matches in a row and exited the tournament early.
It is important to note that Jayasuriya has long been associated with Sri Lanka Cricket. He previously served as chief selector in two separate stints. He understands the system and the intense pressure that surrounds Sri Lankan cricket. That is why his resignation carries significant weight for the board and the team moving forward.
