Sanju Samson Emerges as Favourite to Replace Suryakumar Yadav as India T20I Captain | Reports

Sanju Samson may reportedly miss India’s ODI squad for the Afghanistan series despite starring in IPL 2026 and the T20 World Cup.

Sanju Samson may miss out on India’s ODI squad for the upcoming three-match home series against Afghanistan despite his sensational form in recent months. The Chennai Super Kings batter finished as India’s highest run-scorer in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 and currently leads the IPL 2026 run charts as well.

However, reports from The Times of India suggested the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee could look at different wicketkeeping options when they announce the squad on May 19.

According to reports, Ishan Kishan has emerged as a strong contender for a comeback after more than 2 years away from India’s ODI side. Kishan last played an ODI on October 11, 2023 against Afghanistan in Delhi.

Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant reportedly slipped down the pecking order after struggling with the bat during IPL 2026. Selectors could now prefer Ishan Kishan as the backup wicketkeeper alongside KL Rahul for the Afghanistan ODI series.

Ravindra Jadeja’s ODI Future Under Scanner

India’s selectors are also expected to discuss Ravindra Jadeja’s ODI future after the all-rounder endured a disappointing run in recent assignments. Jadeja missed the ODI tour of Australia last year but returned for the home series against South Africa in December 2025 and New Zealand in January 2026. However, the experienced left-arm spinner struggled to make an impact.

He failed to take a wicket in the 3 ODIs against New Zealand and managed only 1 wicket in 3 matches versus South Africa.
