Shreyas Iyer will miss the South Africa ODIs as he continues to recover from a spleen injury that requires careful monitoring and a gradual rehabilitation plan.
Shreyas Iyer is expected to spend at least two months on the sidelines after fresh medical assessments advised him to avoid high-intensity activity. The injury occurred when he landed awkwardly while taking a catch in the third ODI against Australia, causing abdominal trauma and a spleen laceration that required ICU observation.
Since returning to India, Iyer has undergone regular evaluations, including a recent ultrasonography reviewed by specialist Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala. He has resumed basic daily routines and light isometric exercises but must avoid abdominal strain for a month. A follow-up USG scan will determine when he can begin a structured rehab programme at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
Based on the current timeline, Shreyas Iyer will miss two to three months of cricket, ruling him out of the South Africa ODIs and New Zealand ODIs, with his return dependent on rehabilitation progress.

Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer’s last international innings was a 61 off 77 in Adelaide during India’s 2-1 ODI series defeat, though the team won the T20Is by the same margin. The Punjab Kings retained Shreyas ahead of IPL 2026 after he led them to the 2025 final.
