India captain Shubman Gill is undergoing medical observation in Kolkata after developing sharp neck pain during Day 2 of the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens. Gill walked off after scoring four runs, experiencing sudden stiffness moments after playing a sweep shot. The physio assessed him briefly before advising immediate withdrawal from the innings.
Later in the evening, Gill was taken to a Kolkata hospital for further evaluation, where he is expected to remain overnight. His availability for the remainder of the Test, and potentially the series, will depend on how he responds to treatment. The team management will monitor his recovery closely before making any decision on his return.
“Shubman Gill admitted to the Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata after experiencing pain in the neck. He is expected to be there all night and under observation,” RevSportz reported via their social media.
Notably, Shubman Gill’s neck discomfort reportedly began even before play started on Saturday, raising concerns of a recurring issue, as he had also missed the 2024 Bengaluru Test with a similar problem.
