Shubman Gill’s Participation In 2nd Test Remains Uncertain

Gill faced uncertainty for the second Test after a neck spasm forced him out of the Kolkata match and into a short hospital stay.

Indian Test captain Shubman Gill has been discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment for a neck spasm that forced him to leave the field during the second day of the first Test against South Africa.

The 26-year-old batter was admitted on Sunday for precautionary scans after experiencing discomfort during his brief innings at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, where he managed only three deliveries before retiring hurt.

According to the latest medical reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s medical team has recommended four to five days of complete rest for the skipper.

This development casts significant doubt on his availability for the crucial series-deciding second Test, with medical staff continuing to monitor his recovery progress closely.

Recovery Timeline Creates Selection Dilemma

As reported by RevSportz, Gill’s rehabilitation will be assessed in the coming days to determine his fitness for the Guwahati Test. Although the initial pain has subsided, the conservative recovery approach suggests the medical team is taking no chances with the captain’s long-term fitness.

The timing presents a challenge for team management, with the second Test scheduled from November 22-26 at Barsapara Cricket Stadium. This leaves approximately one week for Gill to complete his recovery and demonstrate match fitness, creating a tight window for the medical team’s assessment.

Gill’s absence was keenly felt during India’s dramatic 30-run defeat in Kolkata. After retiring hurt on 4*, the captain neither returned to the field nor batted in the decisive fourth innings, where India collapsed to 93 all out while chasing 124 runs. Vice-captain Rishabh Pant assumed leadership responsibilities in Gill’s absence throughout the remainder of the match.
