South Africa Announce Squad For T20 World Cup 2026; Aiden Markram to Lead

IND vs SA 2nd T20I | South Africa Crush India by 51 Runs as De Kock’s 90 Shine

South Africa named a settled yet bold squad for the T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka, backing Aiden Markram as captain while leaving out Tristan Stubbs.

South Africa have unveiled a star-studded squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, set to be played in India and Sri Lanka. As expected, the Proteas have largely retained the core group that featured in the recent T20I series against India, signalling continuity in their white-ball plans.

Aiden Markram has been entrusted with the captaincy as he looks to guide South Africa to their first-ever World Cup title. Senior batters Quinton de Kock and David Miller have also been included, adding experience and stability to the batting unit. However, in a surprising decision, the selectors have dropped Tristan Stubbs from the final squad.

Several players are set to make their maiden appearance at a T20 World Cup. Corbin Bosch, Dewald Brevis, Tony de Zorzi, Donovan Ferreira, George Linde, Kwena Maphaka and Jason Smith have all earned their first call-ups to the global event.

Kagiso Rabada Returns After Injury

In a major boost for the Proteas, Kagiso Rabada has returned to the T20I setup after missing the last series against India due to a rib injury. His availability had earlier been in doubt, but his comeback strengthens South Africa’s pace attack, with Rabada remaining the most experienced bowler in the squad.

Jason Smith Handed Surprise Call-Up

Right-handed batter Jason Smith received a surprise inclusion in the T20 World Cup squad. He last represented South Africa in the series against Namibia, where he had modest returns.

Smith has played only two T20Is so far, scoring 37 runs at a strike rate of 102.77. Despite the limited numbers, his ability to bat both at the top and in the middle order has worked in his favour, with the team management valuing his flexibility ahead of the tournament.
