Krishnamachari Srikanth praised Jasprit Bumrah’s captaincy after Mumbai Indians defeated Punjab Kings in IPL 2026.
Mumbai Indians produced a strong all-round performance to defeat Punjab Kings by 6 wickets in their IPL 2026 clash at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala on Thursday. The loss marked PBKS’ fifth straight defeat and delayed their playoff qualification hopes. Punjab posted 200/8 after Prabhsimran Singh smashed a half-century. Mumbai chased the target successfully thanks to Tilak Varma’s unbeaten 75.
Former India World Cup winner Krishnamachari Srikanth later praised Jasprit Bumrah’s captaincy in the absence of Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav. Srikanth said Bumrah’s leadership positively influenced bowlers like Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur.

“Giving Bumrah the captaincy was a good call in the first place, MI pacers did really well with Chahar clicking towards the back end of the innings, after Shardul shocked everyone with his four-fer. Though they are down in the dumps, they still have the will to succeed. Bumrah’s captaincy made a huge difference to Chahar and Thakur,” Srikanth said.
PBKS Suffer Fifth Consecutive Defeat
In the match, stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah elected to field first after winning the toss. PBKS openers Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya attacked early and added a fifty stand inside 5 overs despite a dropped catch from Naman Dhir. Arya scored 22 off 17 before Deepak Chahar struck. Prabhsimran continued his excellent form with 57 off 31 balls, but Shardul Thakur triggered a collapse by dismissing him along with Shreyas Iyer and Suryansh Shedge. Thakur finished with 4 wickets, while Omarzai’s explosive 37 off 17 lifted Punjab to 200/8.

Mumbai responded strongly through Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton, who added 61 runs for the opening wicket. Tilak Varma then controlled the chase with a brilliant unbeaten half-century and guided MI home with 2 balls remaining, handing PBKS a fifth consecutive defeat after their earlier seven-match unbeaten streak.
