Gavaskar Hails India’s Women’s World Cup Triumph As A Moment For The Ages

Sunil Gavaskar lauded that India defeated South Africa to win their first-ever ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup.

In a landmark victory for Indian cricket, the women’s national team clinched their first-ever ICC Women’s World Cup title on Sunday. They defeated South Africa by 52 runs in a rain-affected final at a packed DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.

Batting first, India posted a formidable total of 298 for 7. Opener Shafali Verma led the charge with a solid 87, while all-rounder Deepti Sharma provided a late burst with a brisk 58. In response, South Africa was bowled out for 246. Despite a valiant century from captain Laura Wolvaardt, who scored 101, the Proteas fell short. Deepti Sharma capped off a brilliant all-round performance by taking a five-wicket haul.

The win has triggered nationwide celebrations and is being seen as a potential turning point for women’s cricket in India.

A Victory to Cherish for Generations

Legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar hailed the achievement as a defining moment. “What a wonderful time it was at the D.Y. Patil Stadium yesterday when Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain of the Indian women’s team, took the catch for India to win the ICC Women’s World Cup. What a moment it was. It was a magnificent moment,” Gavaskar said in a video posted on his Instagram account.

He praised the team’s resilience after a challenging tournament. India had suffered three consecutive losses in the league stage before staging a remarkable comeback in the knockouts. “It was terrific to see the way the girls fought. They came back after having a difficult league stage, but the captain showed great character, great determination and went on to win the World Cup. It’s a moment to savour, it’s a moment to cherish, it’s a moment to remember for the ages,” Gavaskar added.
