Suryakumar Yadav Confident of Tilak Varma, Washington Sundar Return For T20 World Cup

Suryakumar Yadav Shrugs Off Form Concerns After India’s T20I Win

Suryakumar Yadav said Tilak Varma and Washington Sundar were recovering well and were expected to be fit before India’s T20 World Cup opener.

India captain Suryakumar Yadav provided an important update on the injury status of Tilak Varma and Washington Sundar ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026. The duo are expected to be part of India’s World Cup squad, but their match-readiness is yet to be fully confirmed. However, Suryakumar expressed confidence that both players would be ready in time for India’s opening match on February 7.

The skipper said he had spoken to both players and received positive feedback on their recovery. Tilak Varma has already resumed batting practice in the nets and has also taken part in a match simulation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Washington Sundar, meanwhile, is close to returning to full training and is set to step back onto the field soon.

Providing an update after the match, Suryakumar said, “I think Washington Sundar is also doing well. We spoke to both of them (Tilak Varma and Washington Sundar) yesterday (Friday). Tilak is much better. Washington has almost started his bowling and batting. So he is also looking good. Hopefully, we get him back soon.”

Both players are expected to play key roles in India’s title defence at the marquee tournament. Tilak Varma is likely to strengthen India’s top-order batting, while Washington Sundar is set to contribute across departments with his all-round abilities.

India will begin their campaign in the 20-team tournament on Saturday at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai against the United States of America. They will then face Namibia on February 12 in New Delhi before travelling to Colombo for the highly anticipated clash against arch-rivals Pakistan. India’s final league-stage match will be against the Netherlands in Ahmedabad on February 18.
