India captain Suryakumar Yadav revealed how Gautam Gambhir’s team-first philosophy has reshaped the squad’s mindset ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026 final against New Zealand.
India captain Suryakumar Yadav offered an interesting insight into head coach Gautam Gambhir’s mindset ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final against New Zealand in Ahmedabad. Speaking during the pre-match press conference, the Indian skipper struck a lighthearted tone while describing how Gambhir’s philosophy has transformed the team’s approach to the game.
According to Suryakumar, the former India opener has emphasized collective effort over individual achievements, pushing players to focus solely on contributing to the team’s success rather than chasing personal milestones.
Suryakumar’s Light-Hearted Take On Gambhir’s Passion
During the interaction with reporters, Suryakumar joked about Gambhir’s intense involvement with the team, suggesting that the coach is so passionate that he might even step onto the field if given the chance.
“Unka (Gambhir) bas chale toh wahi pad pehen kar aa jayein!” (If it were up to him, he’d pad up and bat), Suryakumar told reporters in Ahmedabad on Saturday. “His mantra has been the same since he played and won the World Cups for India: this is a sport where everyone’s contribution matters. You don’t win tournaments because of one or two players.”
Suryakumar explained that Gambhir’s approach mirrors the mindset he carried during his own playing days, particularly when India won major ICC tournaments under his influence.
Personal Milestones No Longer A Priority
The Indian captain further revealed that Gambhir has successfully shifted the team’s mindset away from focusing on individual records. Instead, the players are encouraged to value even the smallest contributions if they help the team move closer to victory.

“If you look from the start – say the Zimbabwe (Super 8) game – every player contributed. Then against West Indies, and even in the semifinal, it was the same story. That’s always the focus. In a team sport, especially in the batting department, every batter’s contribution is necessary. The key thing is he has removed the concept of personal milestones from the team. No one focuses much on that anymore – it’s a team game,” Suryakumar added.
This approach, according to the captain, has helped maintain a strong collective spirit in the squad throughout the tournament.
Small Contributions Matter In Big Matches
Suryakumar also highlighted how even brief cameos can play a crucial role in tight contests. Referring to India’s semifinal win over England, he pointed out that quick runs in the final overs can often prove decisive.
“For example, in the last game (vs England in the semifinal), Tilak (Varma) scored 21 off 7 balls. A knock like that—or even 8 off 5—can be as valuable as a 50 or a 100. We won that game by 7 runs, so someone scoring 7 or 10 runs in three or four balls might have made the difference. That’s the mindset he focuses on. Nothing is more important than the team goal,” he said.
Suryakumar concluded by noting that Gambhir’s philosophy has created a positive environment inside the dressing room, where every player understands their role and works toward the same objective.
“If the team needs someone to hit a six off the first ball, the batter should go for it. If it requires a different approach, he should play that way. That’s the theory behind this team. It spreads positivity and creates a better environment—because when you start thinking about the team rather than yourself, everyone ends up chasing the same goal,” he said.
