Travis Head Says He “Knew England’s Plans” After Brilliant 123 in Perth

Travis Head guided Australia to a 1-0 Ashes lead with a fast 123 in Perth, saying his awareness of England’s plans helped in the chase.

Travis Head delivered a strong batting performance in the Ashes opener, scoring 123 from 83 balls to guide Australia’s eight-wicket win in Perth. He opened in the second innings as Australia chased 205 and maintained pace from the start, with 16 fours and four sixes.

Head approached the innings with a clear understanding of England’s short-ball plans and used that awareness to control the chase. He believes the strong start provides momentum for the five-match series and views the Gabba Test as another chance to build pressure.

“I don’t think I can describe the knock. Good start to the series. They’re a seriously good outfit and the way Starcy led us yesterday, couldn’t let that slip. [Processed yet?] Not even close. I was happy to do it. Knew their plans, short-pitched bowling and what they would bring. Nice to be able to play a role. Lovely start,” Head told Channel 7 after the match.

“Easily could have been out first over, go out there and see what happens. First game, to set the tone. Look forward to Brisbane now, what a start. Tried to hit the breeze. They’re a seriously good bowling outfit. Made a couple of 90s here, I got 99 once – so wasted a couple. But a lovely place to bat. Great moment, I’m no good at getting red ink. Normally try to get off the field as quickly as possible. We’ll celebrate, it’s an Ashes series, we’re 1-0 up, it’s a fantastic start,” he added.

The win gives Australia a 1-0 lead after wrapping up the match inside two days. The team now turns attention to Brisbane, where a pink-ball test awaits on Wednesday, December 3rd.
