Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Shreyas Iyer Added To India’s Asian Games 2026 Probables

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s sensational IPL 2026 campaign has reportedly earned him a place in India’s 30-man Asian Games 2026 probable list, while T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has been left out.

India’s preparations for the 2026 Asian Games have reportedly begun, with a provisional squad of 30 players submitted to the event organisers. The list, according to a report by Amar Ujala, features several notable names, including teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and senior batter Shreyas Iyer.

The men’s cricket tournament at the Asian Games is scheduled to take place from September 24 to October 3 in Japan. From the initial group of 30 players, the BCCI is expected to finalize a 15-member squad closer to the event.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Earns Spot In Probable Squad

One of the biggest talking points from the reported list is the inclusion of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The 15-year-old enjoyed a phenomenal IPL 2026 season and has rapidly emerged as one of the brightest young prospects in Indian cricket.

Representing Rajasthan Royals, Sooryavanshi amassed 776 runs in 16 innings at a staggering strike rate of 237.31. His season was highlighted by a record-breaking six-hitting spree as he surpassed the previous IPL record held by Chris Gayle.

The youngster finished the campaign with an incredible 72 sixes, eclipsing Gayle’s tally of 59 maximums from the 2012 season. His performances have intensified calls for a senior India debut, and the Asian Games could potentially provide that opportunity.

Ruturaj Gaikwad Retains Place Despite T20I Absence

The probable list also includes Ruturaj Gaikwad, who captained India to the gold medal at the 2023 Asian Games. Interestingly, Gaikwad has not featured in a T20 International since India’s tour of Zimbabwe in July 2024.

His inclusion suggests that the selectors continue to value his leadership credentials and experience in multi-nation tournaments. Several members of the gold medal-winning squad from the previous Asian Games have reportedly retained their places in the extended pool.

VVS Laxman Likely To Lead Coaching Staff

The Asian Games cricket competition will overlap with India’s home ODI series against West Indies, which runs from September 27 to October 3. As a result, head coach Gautam Gambhir is expected to remain with the ODI squad.

Former India batter VVS Laxman is likely to take charge of the Asian Games side if the reports are confirmed. Meanwhile, the absence of Suryakumar Yadav from the reported probable list has raised eyebrows. India are also scheduled to tour Ireland for a two-match T20I series before a five-match T20I assignment in England, giving selectors multiple opportunities to assess emerging talents before finalizing the Asian Games squad.
