Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 69 powered RCB to victory, with the star crediting his break from T20s for returning “fresh, excited” and at “120%”.
Virat Kohli made a powerful return to T20 cricket with an unbeaten 69 off 38 balls, guiding Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to a commanding victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Chasing a daunting target of 202, RCB completed the task in just 15.4 overs, with Kohli anchoring the innings to perfection.
This marked Kohli’s first T20 appearance since the IPL 2025 final, where RCB had ended their long wait for a maiden title. Picking up right where he left off, Kohli showcased his trademark composure and aggression, striking five boundaries and five sixes. He sealed the chase in style, smashing Harshal Patel for 6, 4, 4, 4 in a decisive over.
Break From Cricket Helped Kohli Stay Fresh
After the match, Kohli emphasized how crucial the break from T20 cricket had been for his mental and physical well-being. Reflecting on his workload over the years, he admitted that stepping away helped him avoid burnout and return with renewed energy.
“Well, you know, the kind of scheduling that we’ve had over the last 15 years, and the amount of cricket I’ve played, for me, there was always a risk of getting burnt out rather than being undercooked,” Kohli said after the game. “So these breaks helped me immensely. I stay fresh, I stay excited. Whenever I come back to play, it’s 120%. I’m not coming back, you know, underprepared.
“In fact, the extra rest helps me to mentally freshen up. And as long as you’re physically fit and you’re excited mentally, both those things come together nicely. And then you’re able to, you know, contribute for the team’s cause. And that’s what you want to do as a player. You don’t want to hold on to a spot. You want to keep performing, and, you know, keep putting in the work for the team.”

ODI Form Carried Into IPL Momentum
Kohli also credited his recent ODI form for maintaining rhythm despite the long gap in T20 cricket. Earlier this year, he delivered impressive performances against New Zealand and South Africa, including scores of 93, 23, and 124, finishing as India’s leading run-scorer in those series.
He explained that his approach remained consistent, focusing on familiar strengths rather than experimenting unnecessarily.
“I wasn’t playing, you know, shots that I don’t usually play,” he said of his knock against SRH. “So I knew as long as I have the rhythm, and I’ve put enough work physically behind the scenes with my fitness, things should come together nicely. And yeah, tonight was another another chance to start strong and to build on this.”
With this emphatic start, Kohli has once again established himself as the backbone of RCB’s batting lineup as they prepare for their next clash against Chennai Super Kings.
