World Test Championship Set for 12-Team Expansion; ICC Eyes LA 2028 Qualification

ICC is set to expand the World Test Championship to 12 teams from 2027, with Afghanistan, Ireland and Zimbabwe likely to be included.

The International Cricket Council is reportedly planning to make key decisions on the structure of Test cricket and Olympic qualification. The board has scheduled discussions later this month on World Test Championship expansion and Los Angeles 2028 plans.

The first quarterly meetings for 2026 were set in Doha from March 25 to 27. However, the rising tensions in the Middle East and Asia forced the cancellation of in-person sessions. Officials shifted to virtual meetings during the same period. The online format focused on discussions, leaving major decisions pending.

According to Cricket Financial Journal, a major proposal is to expand the WTC from nine to twelve teams in a single division. Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, and Ireland are expected to be added from July 2027. Earlier plans for a two-tier system did not progress. Smaller Full Member boards opposed separation into divisions, fearing reduced opportunities.

Notably, the Chief Executives’ Committee supported plans to expand the World Test Championship, though some top boards held back approval. Plans also include more one-off Tests to boost tours to emerging nations.

Additionally, the Olympic pathway for Los Angeles 2028 is nearing completion. The event will feature 6 teams in both men’s and women’s categories. Regional leaders from Asia, Oceania, Europe, and Africa will qualify. The United States will represent the Americas as host.

The final spot will be decided through a global qualifier in 2027. The ICC aims to confirm these plans before its annual conference in Edinburgh.
