Aakash Chopra Calls Rajat Patidar’s Dismissal ‘Not a Catch’ in RCB vs GT

Aakash Chopra Calls Rajat Patidar’s Dismissal ‘Not a Catch’ in RCB vs GT

Aakash Chopra questioned Rajat Patidar’s controversial dismissal vs GT, saying umpires made a mistake under Law 33.3 in IPL 2026.

Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra criticised the decision that led to Rajat Patidar’s dismissal during Match 42 of IPL 2026 between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans on April 30 in Ahmedabad.

Gujarat Titans chased down 155 comfortably, winning with 4 wickets in hand and 25 balls remaining. In the first innings, RCB were bowled out for 155, with Patidar scoring 19 off 15 before getting out to a catch by Jason Holder off Arshad Khan.

This catch started a debate, with several questioning the legality of the catch. Chopra argued that the decision did not meet the requirements of Law 33.3. He explained that a fielder must have complete control, and the ball should not touch the ground during the process.

Chopra also pointed out that Holder slid while taking the catch and suggested the ball made contact with the ground. He said the umpire made an error and the batter should have stayed not out.

“In my opinion, it wasn’t a catch. Law 33.3 has a clear distinction that once the ball comes into your hand, you need to have full control of the ball and on your body, and until then, the ball shouldn’t touch the ground. Your hand can touch the ground, but the ball can’t,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

“Jason Holder took the catch and slid. When you are sliding, your body is still in motion, and it is not in complete control. When he was sliding, the ball had touched the ground, and the ball wasn’t dead by then. The catch had not been completed. I felt the umpire made a mistake there. It should have been given not out,” he added.

Kaif Questions Rajat Patidar’s Controversial Dismissal

Earlier, former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif also felt Rajat Patidar was unlucky to be given out. Virat Kohli spoke to the fourth umpire, while the team believed the ball touched the ground during the catch. Kaif supported that view and pointed to possible distraction, with Kagiso Rabada running in from nearby.

In the match, RCB posted 155 in 19.2 overs, with Devdutt Padikkal scoring 40 and Kohli adding 28. Arshad Khan took 3 wickets, while Rashid Khan and Holder claimed 2 each.

Gujarat Titans chased 156 in 15.5 overs. Shubman Gill scored 43 off 18, and Jos Buttler made 39 off 19 to lead the side to a 4-wicket win.
