Jonathan Trott remained hopeful of a Super 8 berth despite Afghanistan’s back-to-back losses in the T20 World Cup 2026.
Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott expressed pride in his team’s fighting spirit after their heartbreaking defeat to South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2026 on Wednesday, February 12, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Despite pushing the Proteas to the limit, Afghanistan ended up conceding two crucial points.
The contest witnessed dramatic twists until the final moments. Afghanistan appeared to have the game under control at one stage, needing just two runs off the last three balls. However, Fazalhaq Farooqi was run out at the non-striker’s end while attempting a second run. Afghanistan were bowled out for 187, matching South Africa’s first-innings total.
The match proceeded to two Super Overs, where South Africa eventually secured victory. The defeat marked Afghanistan’s second consecutive loss in the tournament. As a result, Rashid Khan’s side must win their remaining two matches and depend on other outcomes to keep their hopes alive for a place in the Super 8 stage.

Trott, whose tenure as Afghanistan’s head coach will conclude after this tournament, said he was proud of the way his players competed until the end. The game reflected much of his time in charge, filled with moments of hope and heartbreak. However, the former England batter insisted that the team must remain optimistic.
“I think that was a great snapshot. I’d prefer to talk about it (his time in charge) when it’s done than talk about it now. We’ve still got two important games and I respect the side and the job, but also the two games we’ve got coming up are important as well.
I don’t think it’s time to start talking about when I’m not in the position when I am still in the position. I’d like to make sure I get that right and that we get it right. Hopefully this group can surprise a few people and we get a few losses somewhere along the line and we get ourselves back in. We’ve got to stay positive,” Trott said in the post-match press conference.
