Ajit Agarkar Oversees SMAT Matches Amid Questions Over Selection Methods

Ajit Agarkar is currently in Ahmedabad overseeing SMAT matches as tension grows over recent selection decisions and the panel’s connection to domestic cricket.

Ajit Agarkar has remained in Ahmedabad since November 26 as part of his domestic cricket duties. The chairman of selectors has been tracking Group D games of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy(SMAT).

This has drawn attention because the selection panel has now often been criticised for relying too much on international form. They are also facing the heat for not watching enough domestic cricket. Recent choices, including Sai Sudharsan and Nitish Reddy, and the continued absence of Sarfaraz Khan, Abhimanyu Easwaran and Karun Nair, have added to the debate.

Although all five selectors take decisions together, Agarkar faces the most scrutiny because he spends a lot of time traveling with the national team. It is not clear whether his current domestic assignment came after any instruction from the BCCI. However, he has been regularly seen at the Narendra Modi Stadium over the last few days.

Meanwhile, Pragyan Ojha has joined the ODI squad in South Africa. The remaining selectors are monitoring SMAT matches.
