Alastair Cook Responds To Talk Of Replacing McCullum As England Coach

Former England captain Alastair Cook has downplayed speculation about becoming the next England head coach, responding to suggestions in a recent column.

Former England captain Alastair Cook has played down suggestions linking him with the England head coach role. Brendon McCullum has led the side since 2022, following the exit of Chris Silverwood. The discussion gained traction after a recent column by Michael Atherton highlighted Cook as a potential future option.

Cook acknowledged an interest in contributing to England cricket at some stage of his career. However, he confirmed there has been no approach or communication from the England and Wales Cricket Board. Cook also noted that current roles remain filled and unchanged.

“The only thing I will say about it is the article needed to be 800 words and Mike Atherton had done 600 and used the final 200 and threw something in. Look, at some stage in my life, would I like to be involved in the England cricket team? I think I would like to try and make a difference,” he said to TNT Sports.

“I don’t know whether that is the next bit or whatever. At the moment, there are people in jobs and all that kind of stuff. And there has been zero contact. Zero in it. Let’s just see,” Cook added.

In recognition of his contribution to the sport, Cook received a knighthood in the 2019 New Year Honours.
