India pacer Arshdeep Singh gave a humorous response about being in and out of the playing XI under Gautam Gambhir.
Arshdeep Singh has once again handled a tricky question with calm and humour during a media interaction. Asked about frequent changes in his selection since Gautam Gambhir took charge in July 2024, Arshdeep offered a light-hearted reply. He suggested that moving in and out of the team has helped sharpen his skills, much like the movement he gets with the ball.
“Jaise main team se in and out hota hoon uska advantage bhi hai. Mera ball bhi in and out jaata hai (Being in and out of the team has its own set of advantages. Like I am in and out of the team, my ball is also coming in and going out). So I am enjoying that,” Arshdeep answered.
Notably, Arshdeep continues to deliver strong performances despite rotation. He remains India’s leading T20I wicket-taker with 111 wickets from 73 matches. He has featured in 13 of India’s 21 T20Is in 2025 but spent long spells on the sidelines during the Asia Cup.
Focus On Preparation Over Selection
At 26, Arshdeep stressed the importance of controlling only what lies within a player’s role. His approach centres on being ready to bowl with the new or old ball whenever required.
Arshdeep also spoke about adjusting to different match situations. He highlighted the challenge of bowling on flat pitches and the need to rely on planning and execution.
“My job is to stay prepared and perform whenever the team needs me to bowl in any format, with either the new or old ball. My aim is to enjoy the journey, remain in the present, and focus on what I can control. What is beyond my control (selection), I shouldn’t worry about,” he said.

“On a good batting pitch, you find yourself praying, ‘Please God save me today’. Plans are made in team meetings, and on game day, our job is to execute them. If you stick to your plans and execute them well, you usually get results,” Arshdeep continued.
“We need to understand what works on a particular pitch against specific batters. In the end, you should be satisfied with your strategy, and if it doesn’t work, adjustments can be made for the next match. Strategy changes based on conditions. Plans are made considering the opposition, the total on the board, and we adapt accordingly. The key is to stay flexible, which is our team’s main motto. Whether you are called to bowl at the start, middle, or end, you need to remain ready,” he concluded.
