Australia’s 2026-27 contract list springs surprises as big names miss out while selectors prioritise Test depth for a demanding season.

Cricket Australia has unveiled its 21-player central contract list for the 2026–27 men’s season, and the selections have sparked widespread discussion. Several notable names, including Sam Konstas, Jhye Richardson, Matthew Renshaw, and Glenn Maxwell, were left out despite their recent performances.

Their exclusion comes as a surprise, especially with Australia heading into a packed international calendar, where squad depth is expected to play a crucial role.

Focus on Test Core Ahead of Busy Schedule

Selection chief George Bailey emphasized that the decisions were influenced by the demanding schedule in the ICC World Test Championship cycle.

“The next 12 months encompasses a busy Test schedule across a range of conditions and challenges,” Bailey said.

“This is reflected in the contract list through a predominance of Test and multi-format players for this cycle.

“Given the upcoming schedule of series we know we will continue to need and utilise players outside of those contracted.

“This year, perhaps more than ever, it is essential we continue working closely with and collaborate with states to ensure players are developing and ready for International cricket when they get opportunities.”

Australia are set to face Bangladesh, South Africa, New Zealand, and India in crucial series that will shape their chances of reaching another World Test Championship final.

New Faces Included, Opportunities Still Open

While some big names missed out, players like Todd Murphy, Brendan Doggett, and Jake Weatherald earned spots in the contract list, reflecting a shift towards strengthening the Test bench.

The list also features established stars such as Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, and Marnus Labuschagne.

Importantly, non-contracted players will still have opportunities to earn upgrades by featuring regularly in international matches over the next year, keeping the competition for places wide open.
