BCCI has reportedly barred Indian players from staying with families during the T20 World Cup, sticking to a policy introduced after the 2024-25 Australia tour.
The BCCI has decided that players will not stay with family members during the T20 World Cup. The policy remains unchanged after India’s 1–3 defeat against Australia in the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. A report from the Indian Express stated that the current team management sought clarification but received a firm response.
Under existing rules, family visits are allowed for up to 14 days only on overseas tours longer than 45 days. The T20 World Cup began on February 7, with India winning their opener against the USA at the Wankhede Stadium. India will play three group matches at home and one game in Colombo against Pakistan on February 15.

Before the tournament, India featured in several bilateral series without family stays. The squad is travelling via private charter flights. Personal chefs are part of the setup but stay separately, preparing meals at nearby hotels and sending food to players.
Notably, it was India’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy defeat against Australia that prompted a major policy shift. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, players have been allowed to keep their families with them on overseas tours. Concerns later emerged after staff flagged missed team meetings and planning sessions. As a result, the BCCI revised its rules in January 2025. Under the updated policy, families can stay only 14 days on tours lasting more than 45 days.
In the ongoing T20 World Cup, India next face Namibia on Thursday, February 12, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. After that fixture, the defending champions will travel to Colombo for the match against Pakistan.
